Movement in Gorilla Tag works differently from standard character controls because the gorilla moves by pushing, pulling, climbing, and launching from surfaces with its arms. There is no traditional story campaign or sequence of numbered levels. Instead, the game focuses on multiplayer movement, chasing other gorillas, exploring large environments, and learning techniques that make it easier to climb, escape, or catch other players.

Moving Like a Gorilla

Players travel without normal walking controls. To gain speed, they push their hands against the ground or walls, while climbing requires repeatedly grabbing and launching from surfaces. Trees, branches, rocks, ropes, platforms, and walls can all become part of a route. More experienced players learn techniques for quickly moving between surfaces, climbing walls, changing direction, and maintaining momentum during a chase.

Tag Modes and Objectives

Different modes change what players need to accomplish. Infection starts with one infected gorilla that must tag the others until everyone becomes infected. Hunt assigns specific targets, while Paintbrawl divides players into teams and uses slingshots for ranged attacks. Casual mode removes the competitive objective and allows players to move around and interact freely.

During a typical session, players can:

·         chase other gorillas through the environment;

·         climb trees, walls, ropes, and structures;

·         escape infected players in Infection;

·         search for assigned targets in Hunt;

·         use slingshots during Paintbrawl matches;

·         practice movement techniques without a fixed objective;

·         explore different areas with other players.

Maps and Exploration

The game contains multiple environments with different layouts and movement opportunities. Forest is built around trees, platforms, and wooden structures, while Canyons uses cliffs, ropes, and narrow passages. Caves takes players underground, Mountains contains snowy slopes and surfaces, and other areas introduce features such as water, elevated platforms, buildings, or enclosed spaces. Some special areas also contain activities that differ from normal tag matches.

Gorilla Tag does not use character levels or a normal upgrade system. Progress comes mainly from improving movement and learning each map. Players gradually become better at climbing, escaping, predicting routes, and using the environment during matches. Additional activities such as Monke Blocks also allow players to build structures from snap-together pieces and then move through the creations.
