A locked basement across the street becomes the center of the mystery in Hello Neighbor. The player controls Nicky Roth, a boy who sees his neighbor, Mr. Peterson, locking someone inside his house. Nicky decides to investigate, but the Neighbor actively searches for him and tries to stop every break-in. The story later follows Nicky after his capture and eventually returns to the neighborhood when he is an adult.
Sneaking Through the House
Gameplay combines stealth, exploration, platforming, and environmental puzzles. Players enter the Neighbor’s house, search rooms, collect keys and tools, move furniture, activate switches, and discover routes to otherwise inaccessible areas. Mr. Peterson patrols the property and can chase Nicky after seeing or hearing him. Getting caught usually returns the player to a previous area, so finding alternate entrances and hiding places is important.
Puzzles and Useful Objects
Many doors and areas cannot be reached directly. The player must experiment with objects and understand how different parts of the house interact. Boxes can help reach higher places, keys open specific locks, and devices such as generators, switches, and elevators are involved in larger puzzles.
Typical actions include:
· searching rooms for keys and tools;
· throwing or placing objects to solve puzzles;
· climbing onto roofs and upper floors;
· hiding or running when the Neighbor approaches;
· unlocking routes into the basement;
· completing Fear minigames to gain new abilities.
Acts and Progression
Hello Neighbor is divided into three main acts followed by a finale. Act 1 focuses on entering the house and reaching the basement. Act 2 begins after Nicky is captured and requires him to escape the expanded property. Act 3 takes place years later and features the largest version of the house, additional puzzles, Fear minigames, and another journey into the basement.
The Fear sections provide abilities needed later in the game, including invisibility, double jumping, and the ability to push the Neighbor away. Progress ultimately leads through the basement and into the final confrontation, where the puzzles and strange environments reflect Nicky’s memories and fear of Mr. Peterson. Exploration, observation, and experimenting with objects remain the main ways to advance throughout the game.
