Hotline Miami is a top-down action game about a masked man known as Jacket, who receives mysterious phone messages instructing him to visit specific addresses and kill everyone inside. The story takes place in Miami in 1989 and gradually becomes less straightforward as Jacket’s memories, hallucinations, and the events surrounding the killings begin to overlap. The game does not explain everything immediately, and parts of the story are revealed through conversations, environmental details, dreams, and later discoveries about the people behind the calls.
Missions and Level Structure
The game is divided into chapters built around separate locations such as apartments, offices, clubs, warehouses, and other buildings. Most levels require Jacket to clear every hostile enemy before leaving the area. Death happens very quickly, often after a single hit, but restarting is almost immediate. This creates a loop of entering a room, learning enemy positions, changing the approach, and repeating the section until the entire floor is cleared.
Weapons, Masks, and Combat
Combat combines firearms, melee weapons, thrown objects, and environmental positioning. During missions, players can:
· punch enemies or perform finishing attacks;
· use bats, knives, pipes, and other melee weapons;
· pick up pistols, shotguns, rifles, and automatic weapons;
· throw weapons to knock enemies down;
· use doors to stun enemies;
· choose different animal masks before some missions;
· build score through fast kills and varied attacks.
Masks can provide gameplay effects, such as changing movement speed, improving certain weapons, or altering how a level begins.
How to Play
Movement is controlled directly while the mouse is used for aiming and attacking. Players can lock onto nearby targets, pick up dropped weapons, and quickly switch equipment as enemies are defeated. Gunfire attracts attention, so a loud approach can cause several opponents to investigate at once, while melee attacks allow quieter room clearing.
Hotline Miami does not use character levels or traditional upgrades. Progress comes from completing chapters, earning scores, unlocking additional masks and weapons, and learning how enemies react. Later missions introduce more difficult layouts, armed opponents, dogs, and situations where careful timing becomes increasingly important. The game also includes multiple playable perspectives later in the story, expanding what happened beyond Jacket’s point of view and leading toward different conclusions depending on what the player discovers.
