Universe Sandbox is a space simulation game where the player can create, modify, and destroy planetary systems using real-time physics. There is no story campaign, protagonist, or fixed sequence of levels. Instead, the game provides a large collection of astronomical simulations together with tools for building custom systems. Players can place planets, moons, stars, black holes, and other objects, then watch how gravity, collisions, temperature, and orbital motion affect them over time.

Gravity Connects Everything

Every object influences nearby bodies according to its mass and position. Changing the mass of a planet can disturb its moons, adding another star can destabilize an entire system, and moving an object slightly can eventually produce a collision. Time can be accelerated to observe processes that would normally take thousands or millions of years. The simulation can also be paused whenever the player wants to inspect an orbit or make adjustments.

The main activities include:

  • creating planets, stars, moons, and black holes;
  • changing mass, radius, temperature, and other properties;
  • placing objects into custom orbits;
  • simulating asteroid and planetary collisions;
  • increasing or decreasing simulation speed;
  • modifying atmospheres and surface conditions;
  • experimenting with known Solar System objects;
  • saving custom simulations for later use.

Collisions Can Transform Entire Worlds

Objects do not simply disappear when they hit each other. Large impacts can heat planets, remove material, alter rotation, or completely destroy smaller bodies. The player can launch asteroids toward Earth, collide planets together, or place stars close enough to produce extreme gravitational effects. Stars can also evolve and experience events such as supernovae depending on the conditions being simulated.

Climate Adds Another Layer of Experimentation

Universe Sandbox also models temperature, sunlight, water, atmospheres, and other planetary conditions. Moving Earth closer to or farther from the Sun can change its climate, while modifying atmospheric properties can affect surface temperature. These systems allow the player to experiment with hypothetical habitable worlds rather than focusing only on orbital mechanics.

There are no upgrades, character statistics, or permanent progression systems. The available simulations function more like experiments than missions, and the player decides what objective to pursue. One session might involve rebuilding the Solar System, while another could focus on creating a stable binary-star system or testing what happens when two massive planets collide. Universe Sandbox is therefore centered on experimentation, observation, and creating astronomical scenarios rather than completing a conventional campaign.
