Cuphead is a run-and-gun action game about brothers Cuphead and Mugman, who lose a bet at the Devil’s casino and put their souls at risk. To avoid immediate punishment, they agree to collect soul contracts from other debtors scattered across the Inkwell Isles. The story follows their journey through increasingly dangerous areas until they finally return to confront the Devil and decide how the contract dispute ends. The adventure can be played alone or in local cooperative mode.
Exploring the Inkwell Isles
The world is divided into several overworld areas that connect boss encounters, Run ’n Gun stages, shops, mausoleums, and hidden secrets. Progress requires defeating enough bosses to collect contracts and unlock access to later islands. Most major encounters are multi-phase boss fights in which enemies transform, introduce new attacks, or change the arena as their health decreases.
Combat and Abilities
Cuphead and Mugman attack by firing continuously while running, jumping, crouching, and dashing around hazards. Pink objects can be parried, building the super meter and allowing stronger attacks. Players can equip different weapons and charms before entering a stage.
· Peashooter provides balanced straight shots;
· Spread fires several short-range projectiles;
· Chaser automatically follows targets;
· Lobber travels in an arcing path;
· Charge creates stronger shots when held;
· charms modify abilities such as health, dash behavior, or parrying;
· Super Arts provide powerful attacks after being unlocked.
Run ’n Gun levels differ from boss battles because the player moves through platforming stages filled with regular enemies, traps, coins, and environmental hazards. Coins can be spent at Porkrind’s Emporium on additional weapons and charms, while mausoleums unlock Super Arts. Boss stages receive grades based on factors such as completion time, remaining health, parries, and super-meter use.
Progression and How to Play
Cuphead does not use character levels or experience points. Progress comes from defeating bosses, collecting contracts, unlocking new areas, buying equipment, and learning attack patterns through repeated attempts. Players need to recognize visual cues, move into safe positions, parry suitable objects, and select weapons that fit the encounter. The Delicious Last Course expansion adds another island, Ms. Chalice as a playable character, additional weapons and charms, and a separate quest involving Chef Saltbaker and the ingredients for the Wondertart.
