Doodle Empires is an alternate-history sandbox where the player creates nations directly on a map and decides how their borders and relationships change over time. There is no fixed campaign story or predefined historical outcome. Instead, each session produces its own history as countries appear, expand, split, unite, change leaders, develop faiths, and create new cultural origins. The game gives the player control over the direction of the world while a card system adds rules and limits to how that world can be changed.

Creating Nations and Borders

A new world begins by creating a nation, choosing its border color, giving it a name, and drawing its territory on the map. Drawing is limited by drawing power, so borders cannot be expanded without restriction. After using the available power, the player selects a nation through its inspector and draws cards that determine what actions can be performed next. Expanding into empty territory costs less than taking land that already belongs to another nation.

Cards That Change the World

Cards are the main way to develop the map and create new events. Depending on the card drawn, the player can change borders, governments, cultures, defenses, or religions. Important card actions include:

  • Expand in small, medium, or large amounts;
  • Split part of an existing nation into a new country;
  • Union two nations by annexing one into another;
  • create a completely new nation and Origin Group;
  • replace a leader and receive different leader traits;
  • build castles that make nearby territory harder to capture;
  • found or adopt a faith;
  • diverge an existing cultural origin;
  • use Age Cards that temporarily change how frequently certain card types appear.

Map Views and Progression

Doodle Empires does not use traditional numbered levels. A session progresses through the development of the map itself, and the player decides when nations rise, disappear, merge, or divide. Several map modes provide different information: Political Mode displays national borders, Origin Mode shows cultural ancestry, Faith Mode displays religious territory, and Fort Mode highlights areas protected by castles. The current game also includes a custom map maker for creating different starting environments.

There is no single win condition that forces every session toward the same ending. The main activity is building an alternate timeline and observing how repeated decisions transform the map. A small nation can gradually occupy large areas, an empire can be divided into several states, or neighboring countries can be joined through a union. Because cards restrict which actions are currently available, players cannot simply redraw everything whenever they want, giving the sandbox a structured turn-based rhythm while still leaving the overall history open to player choice.
