Project SEKAI: Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku, commonly shortened to PJSK, is a rhythm game that combines Vocaloid music with character-focused visual novel stories. Players follow several groups of young musicians who discover mysterious alternate worlds called SEKAI. These spaces are created from their feelings and are inhabited by different versions of Hatsune Miku and other Virtual Singers. Each group has its own story, conflicts, musical style, and version of SEKAI.

Songs Use Several Note Types

The rhythm gameplay is based on tapping notes as they reach the judgment line. Charts contain regular taps, holds, flicks, and connected slide notes, with patterns becoming much faster and more complex on higher difficulties. Songs can be played at several difficulty levels, allowing the same track to work for both new players and experienced rhythm-game fans. Performance is graded through timing judgments, combo count, score, and whether the song is cleared.

The main gameplay includes:

  • playing Vocaloid and original character songs;
  • choosing from multiple chart difficulties;
  • building teams from collectible character cards;
  • upgrading and training cards;
  • reading main, event, and character stories;
  • playing cooperative rhythm shows;
  • participating in limited-time events;
  • customizing characters with costumes.

Each Unit Has Its Own Story

PJSK follows groups such as Leo/need, MORE MORE JUMP!, Vivid BAD SQUAD, Wonderlands×Showtime, and Nightcord at 25:00. Their stories cover different goals and personal problems, from rebuilding friendships and becoming professional performers to creating stage shows or making music anonymously online. The Virtual Singers, including Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin and Len, Megurine Luka, MEIKO, and KAITO, appear in different forms depending on the SEKAI connected to each group.

Events Continue the Characters’ Lives

There are no conventional numbered levels forming one linear campaign. Story progression is divided between main unit stories and frequent events that continue particular character relationships or introduce new situations. Event gameplay usually involves playing songs to earn points, unlock story chapters, and collect rewards. New cards are often connected to the event’s theme and provide additional character episodes.

Progress also comes from expanding the song library, improving character cards, raising character ranks, and completing more difficult charts. Players can focus mainly on rhythm gameplay or spend more time reading the stories and collecting characters. PJSK therefore combines a large rhythm-game song catalog with ongoing narrative content, character development, team building, and regular events rather than relying on a single campaign with a defined ending.
