Everyday life on a small island becomes unpredictable once it is populated with Miis in Tomodachi Life. There is no traditional story campaign or fixed ending. Instead, the player creates residents, gives them names, voices, personalities, and birthdays, and then watches their lives develop. Miis form friendships, argue, fall in love, get married, have children, and react to situations based on their individual traits.
Life on the Island
Most of the gameplay involves visiting apartments and responding to residents who have problems or requests. A Mii may be hungry, want new clothes, ask for help making a friend, or need advice after an argument. Solving these situations increases their happiness and can reward the player with money, items, or other bonuses. Residents also interact with each other without direct control, so relationships can change even when the player is focused elsewhere.
Activities and Customization
The island gradually becomes filled with places where residents can shop, meet, eat, perform, or take part in events. Players can customize individual Miis and give them items that affect their reactions.
Common activities include:
· giving Miis food and discovering their favorite or least favorite dishes;
· buying clothes, hats, and room interiors;
· helping residents become friends or romantic partners;
· playing short minigames when a Mii asks;
· watching dreams and unusual nighttime scenes;
· giving gifts that unlock new activities;
· attending concerts and island events.
Relationships and Progression
Relationships are one of the main systems in Tomodachi Life. Miis can become friends, best friends, sweethearts, spouses, or rivals. The player often acts as an adviser when a resident wants to confess feelings, apologize, or repair a friendship. Successful couples may eventually marry, move into a house, and have a baby, creating another resident who can later grow up.
Progress is based on improving the island rather than completing numbered levels. New locations and features become available as more Miis move in and certain conditions are met. Money earned from solving problems can be spent on food, clothing, interiors, and gifts. Tomodachi Life is built around checking on residents regularly, reacting to unexpected events, building relationships, collecting items, and watching how the island changes as its population becomes more connected.
