Just Shapes & Beats is a rhythm-based action game where the player controls a small shape and avoids pink hazards moving in time with electronic music. The main character in Story Mode is a blue square, and the objective is usually to survive until the track ends rather than defeat enemies directly. The story follows the square as it travels through several areas, meets other friendly shapes, and confronts a corrupted antagonist that spreads destruction through the world.
Story Mode and Levels
Story Mode is divided into chapters including Tutorial, Paradise, Island, Volcano, Industry, Tower, and Ending, with a Lost Chapter also available. Each chapter contains music-based stages and occasional boss battles. Completing a level unlocks it for Playlist Mode, while story progression is saved automatically. Some stages let the player choose which track to complete first, while others lead directly into a boss encounter or story sequence.
Dodging to the Beat
The core gameplay is based on movement and survival. During a track, players must:
· move around the available area;
· avoid pink projectiles, walls, lasers, and moving shapes;
· dash through dangerous sections;
· follow changing patterns synchronized with the music;
· survive until the track reaches its end;
· complete boss battles with more complex attack patterns;
· revive teammates during multiplayer play.
Taking damage removes part of the player character, and receiving too many hits breaks the shape and ends the attempt. Boss battles provide additional health compared with regular levels.
Modes and Multiplayer
Outside Story Mode, players can use Challenge Mode, Playlist Mode, and Party Mode. Playlist Mode allows previously unlocked songs to be selected directly, while Challenge Mode creates a sequence of tracks for players to complete. Party Mode is designed as a more forgiving way to play and automatically provides additional health. Story Mode itself can also be played with multiple players using additional controllers.
Just Shapes & Beats does not use character levels, equipment, or permanent combat upgrades. Progress comes from completing songs, unlocking tracks, advancing through story chapters, and learning increasingly difficult hazard patterns. The player mainly needs to watch where attacks appear, move into safe spaces, and use the dash when normal movement is not fast enough. Repeated attempts make patterns easier to recognize, while Hardcore and Casual options can increase or reduce the difficulty of surviving individual stages.
